Finding Out About Someone Through an Online Background Check

May 20th, 2010

Background Check

The Internet provides a ton of information on people and there are sites dedicated to providing a free Background Check database. Employers commonly use background check services on potential employees, but anyone who knows how to search the Internet can find information about the people in their life including teachers, friends, and potential dates. Even with the basic information that a free check provides, a person can use other online databases to research further.

Locating the Information

Most employers have a background checking service they pay a fee to for potential employees. Fingerprinting may even be a requirement for some jobs. But the everyday person doesn’t usually have the money or the time to work with a professional background checking service. This is where researching online for Free Background Check information comes in useful.

A quick online search will result in thousands of pages, many of them marketing sites for background checking services. But the free databases offered on these sites in an attempt to get people to purchase other services provide enough information to perform a background check on someone. Every online database has its differences, with some providing very little information and others having more detailed results. Some of the databases will even link to other sites that provide more background screening results.

A single mom who wants to protect her family can find out information about someone she’s dating by using an online background check. She can find out such information as his age, previous cities he’s lived, former and current addresses, relatives, listed phone numbers, and email addresses. With this information she can find out any criminal history, if he’s a registered sex offender, his past real estate transactions, and how many tickets he’s received. By putting this information into more specific state and county databases, anyone can find out about teachers, neighbors, friends, contractors, and nannies who have access to their home.

Using the Information

The cause of a background check usually results from the feeling that someone isn’t being truthful. To ease doubts that arise about someone’s age, criminal background, marital status, or their place of residence a background check is a good option. But what do you do with the information once you have it? The basic information such as age and place of residence usually pops right up in a background check. But the more in-depth information, such as criminal history, requires more research.

A public records search is a great way to utilize the information found in a free background check. Public records include property appraisal information, criminal record information, and court records. With the basic information from the background check, you can find out if someone owns their home, if they’ve ever been charged with a crime, and even how many speeding tickets they’ve received. While paid background checks offer more detailed information, with a little leg work it’s not difficult finding background information about someone with the information provided by a free online check.

How do I get online background check results notarized?

October 12th, 2011

I only need the notarization to prove that the Background Check results I have printed off from the website is actually what showed up on that website.

Thank you!

The style of your writing makes me think you are in the USA. Some, but not all, states allow notaries to make certified copies of documents, and certainly a web page is a document. The notary will have to see the web page, and might have to make the printout.

In other states, you may be able to prepare a statement (affidavit) that you made a true copy of the web page, and then go to the notary and swear to the truth of your affidavit. Of course this isn’t as good, because it is YOU, not the NOTARY, who is swearing that the printout is a true copy.

Depending on how you are interacting with the person who will use the background check, there may be a better way. Some background check sites will give you a web address and a special code, which you give to the person who wants to see the background check. Then that person enters the web address and the code, and can see the check results for themselves.

How come my DUI from 5 yrs ago did not show the criminal background check?

October 1st, 2011

I got a DUI about 5 yrs ago, blew a .05 and I ran a criminal Background Check on myself on Intelius and nothing was found. Am I in the clear when a potential employer runs a background check? On the application, should I disclose the DUI or not?
Sorry, forgot to say that this was in Queens NY and that I had pleaded guilty.

Were you convicted in court of a DUI? If your employer asks, then you should be honest. It will probably show up in a background check through court records. You could check online to see if there are open court records for your county or check at your county court in person.

September 18th, 2011

I am going to rent a house and the company that owns the house said they do a background check. What is a background check, what do they look for? My husband and I have NO run in with the laws nor do we drink or anything. My worry is my credit, I am losing my home because we both got laid off, and Now I got a good paying job again after two years of laid off. I am really hoping a background check isn’t a credit check. Does anyone knows what they look for?

Credit is only a small part of the story. Your circumstances are so common that it will barely register as a risk. Pervasive credit problems, bad checks, and criminal activity would paint a very different picture.

In general, the Background Check will help paint a picture that you have lived an orderly life and that people in their position have not suffered in their relationship with you.
