How do I get online background check results notarized?

Wednesday, October 12th, 2011

I only need the notarization to prove that the Background Check results I have printed off from the website is actually what showed up on that website.

Thank you!

The style of your writing makes me think you are in the USA. Some, but not all, states allow notaries to make certified copies of documents, and certainly a web page is a document. The notary will have to see the web page, and might have to make the printout.

In other states, you may be able to prepare a statement (affidavit) that you made a true copy of the web page, and then go to the notary and swear to the truth of your affidavit. Of course this isn’t as good, because it is YOU, not the NOTARY, who is swearing that the printout is a true copy.

Depending on how you are interacting with the person who will use the background check, there may be a better way. Some background check sites will give you a web address and a special code, which you give to the person who wants to see the background check. Then that person enters the web address and the code, and can see the check results for themselves.

what is a background check for a rental?

Sunday, September 18th, 2011

I am going to rent a house and the company that owns the house said they do a background check. What is a background check, what do they look for? My husband and I have NO run in with the laws nor do we drink or anything. My worry is my credit, I am losing my home because we both got laid off, and Now I got a good paying job again after two years of laid off. I am really hoping a background check isn’t a credit check. Does anyone knows what they look for?

Credit is only a small part of the story. Your circumstances are so common that it will barely register as a risk. Pervasive credit problems, bad checks, and criminal activity would paint a very different picture.

In general, the Background Check will help paint a picture that you have lived an orderly life and that people in their position have not suffered in their relationship with you.

How lenient are background check agencies on unpaid internships?

Thursday, August 25th, 2011

I did an unpaid internship for my dad’s business about 3 years ago. I am being background checked right now and they asked for the W2/paycheck stub for this internship. I am inclined to tell them it was for my dad’s business and unpaid, but just the fact that unpaid internships are "technically" illegal here makes me a little worried. Are Background Check agencies usually lenient on this sort of things?

Background checks are not that powerful. They usually only check to see if you had been in prison or probation and convictions of crime. If they do anything more, they will have to call your employers or write letter to them. They cannot force a business to turn over records to them and basically they would only ask legal questions such as if you worked there. Unless your applying for a secret/security clearance job of some sought, they wouldn’t find any more than what you already told them. Point is there is no way they are going to ask a company if they illegally hired people and then do something if the company actually said yes.

Can an employer do a background check without your permission?

Tuesday, August 16th, 2011

For example you apply for a job and before they even decide to call you they run a background check.
How is it done? Do you have to give them certain information for them to call and find out? Like if i worked at Target they would call target. Is that considered a BG check?

if they run a consumer report which is what a background check is and if it is done by a third party (a consumer reporting agency) then it is covered by FCRA and they must have your permission in writing as well as the FCRA release form….
if they do a Criminal Background Check on their own, they do NOT use a consumer reporting agency they do NOT need the FCRA form……

if they are checking work references that you listed on an application or resume’ then you have given them permission by listing those references….
and NO if they check with Target that is NOT a Background Check that is an employment verification or reference check…

How deep does a criminal background check go?

Lets say that you are looking for an apartment for rent. Some places ask for a criminal Background Check. Does that mean they are going to search a particular state that you are residing in? Or does it mean a statewide check? If anything is found, what stops you from renting an apartment? What doesn’t ?

Most companies would do a nationwide search and anything you have done would show up, any negative entry could stop you but it depends on the individual owners.}{

How lenient are background check agencies on unpaid internships?

Friday, June 3rd, 2011

I did an unpaid internship for my dad’s business about 3 years ago. I am being background checked right now and they asked for the W2/paycheck stub for this internship. I am inclined to tell them it was for my dad’s business and unpaid, but just the fact that unpaid internships are "technically" illegal here makes me a little worried. Are background check agencies usually lenient on this sort of things?

If it was a true internship under the standards imposed by the Federal Labor Standards Act (FLSA) then it is legal, but if it is an actual job for which someone would normally be paid then it would be a violation of the minimum wage pay requirements under the FLSA and California minimum wage laws because it your dad runs a for-profit business (as opposed to nonprofit or public/government employer).

The internship must fulfill all of the following criteria:

1. The training, even though it includes actual operation of the facilities of the employer, is similar to that which would be given in a vocational school;
2. The training is for the benefit of the trainee;
3. The trainees do not displace regular employees, but work under close observation;
4. The employer that provides the training derives no immediate advantage from the activities of the trainees and on occasion the employer’s operations may actually be impeded;
5. The trainees are not necessarily entitled to a job at the completion of the training period; and
6. The employer and the trainee understand that the trainees are not entitled to wages for the time spent in training.

Items 3 and 4 are the ones that are most problematic for most private employers that claim to use unpaid volunteers for "internship" positions and it’s likely that the work you did for your father’s business would not fulfill those criteria.

There are a lot of illegal unpaid "internships" in the private sector that never get reported. While I am not advocating what your father or any of these employers do, it is unlikely that the agency that conducts your Background Check will report your father to the Department of Labor. They have no real interest in doing so, so you should not be too concerned with telling them that it was an unpaid internship position.
