Are there any free background check web sites?

Every free site is only free until you want to see results! does someone no how to check for a criminal background? Since this is a matter of public record it should in theory at least be easy. I have already checked state and county sites, links there take me to pay sites! Need it before tomorrow please!
If not can someone suggest a reputible, yet inexpensive sit?
